Well after he’d secured the jail deck for the night, Nur-zai Gin sat in his own quarters, staring at the little data storage device. For the first time in as long as he remembered, Nur-zai now, for some reason, felt conflicted about lying. He had lied almost habitually growing up, though not to Kil-Joi, his master, who would smack him so hard he would sometimes pass out if Kil-Joi found out the truth, which it always seemed that he did. It had been a necessity of life aboard the slave ship. You lied about who hit you and who didn’t, whether it hurt or not, about how the food tasted, about how you felt about your job, to get someone else in trouble for something you did, and on and on.
So why should now, he feel so…so emotional, perhaps even guilty, about lying to Giana, his prize prisoner? He was even lying to his Captain, Kil-Joi, about the device he flipped over and over in his hand. And for good reason. Kil-Joi would probably strip Nur-zai of his position and beat Nur-zai if he knew that Nur-zai had such a device, and yet, Kil-Joi would never give Nur-zai his freedom if Nur-zai couldn’t find out the truth about the prisoner Giana, and that device was his golden ticket to knowing that! Of course, he would lie. He must lie! And if he told his prisoner about the device, she might tell Kil-Joi. And certainly, Nur-zai would never be allowed to watch it. He. Must. Lie.
So why, all of a sudden, did he feel so guilty about doing so? Nur-zai shook his head as he took Kil-Joi’s decoding machine from its hiding place under his bed. Such thoughts were too much for him at this time of night. He inserted Giana’s data storage device into the machine, and he once again began to see all around him the scenes Giana described.
